Holguin, historical city of the XVIII century, homeland of the Major General Calixto Garcia Iñiguez, located in the northern part of the eastern region of Cuba, takes from its beginning the popular title of City of Parks.
This title comes given by its urban structure because its center part is constituted by five parks in block and in the parallel line from north to south:
· Calixto García Park (Oldest Barrack Square)
· Julio Grave de Peralta Park (Las Flores’ Park)
· San Jose Park (Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Park)
· Marti Park (Victoriana de Avila Park)
· Infantile Park (Rubén Bravo Park)
In the colonial time these seats which today we call parks, urban spaces that are bound up with the historical and social development of the Holguin City, are located throughout two main streets of the Holguin City, the streets San Isidoro or Major Street and San Miguel, today called Libertad and Maceo, respectively.
In the surroundings of those these seats It’s grouped the most important houses and public and commercial establishments of the Holguin City responding to the economic and social interests, besides the evolution and splendor of the urban parcel.
The architecture in Holguin City is closely related to The Church of San Isidoro and The Church of San Jose.
Holguin constitutes one of the richest scenarios in the nature in Cuba. High mountains, fertile plains and beaches of fine sands are alternated in the landscape of Holguin, county of singular beauty and attractiveness multiple. It was in this area of Cuba (Bariay) where the admiral Cristóbal Colón disembarked in 1492 that was fascinated by the beauty of this place.
Holguin is the fourth bigger county of Cuba, with extension of 9 300.6 Km² according to National Cadaster with date December 31, 2001 that it represents 8,6% of the total surface of the Island of Cuba, having 14 municipalities in which 1111 populational establishments are located, of them 43 urbans.
Holguin county is adjacent with four counties: the counties of Las Tunas and Guantánamo, to the west and the east, respectively, besides limiting to the south with Granma and Santiago de Cuba, and for the north with the Ocean Atlantic.
Holguin City, also called City of Parks, it takes the best and more valuable in the local and universal culture with exponents in all the branches of the culture and representatives in many of them of fame in Cuba and in other parts of the world, as Faustino Oramas (El Guayabero), Cosme Proenza, Frank Fernández and others.
Holguin County possesses a historical-cultural rich tradition that embraces from the prehispanic stage until the present time.
Holguin has wide areas of critics, cultivation of the tobacco and cane of sugar. The fishing industry squatter an outstanding place inside Cuba and the fundamental economic activities are based on the agriculture, the industry and the tourism.
Although Holguin was an agricultural region traditionally, at the moment it is one of the main industrial areas of Cuba. Called it The Earth of the Nickel, its production contributes 20% of the economic earning of the country for concept of exports.
The tourism in Holguin has reached a notable development in the last years and it will achieve to have an appreciable importance. The third Center of Tourism Attraction is considered in importance inside Cuba. It has many natural attractiveness and par excellence an unsurpassable beauty in its fields and beaches.
